Asleep in Jesus

W
hen Christians pass away, newspapers often report their passing with the phrase "Asleep in Jesus." Additionally, on tombstones, people frequently place a cross and write the deceased's name, birth date, and date of death beneath it. They also include the acronym "RIP" (Rest In Peace), which means that the person has found rest in peace without suffering. Furthermore, during funeral services or at cemeteries, on memorial cards, people often write "Called by God." However, do those who write or read these words truly mean them? Are they simply following tradition?

Additionally, pastors often say that the deceased have "gone to heaven" when someone passes away. Do all individuals who pass away truly go to heaven as the pastors claim? Do those attending the service ponder these statements or simply accept them out of tradition? Have you ever deeply reflected on such matters?

Does every Christian who dies truly go to heaven? According to the Bible, Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21). So, can a person truly do the will of the Father? The Bible says, "The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who act wisely, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; no one does good, not even one" (Psalm 14:2-3). Therefore, there is no one who can do the will of God, and thus no one can enter heaven.

However, Jesus came to represent humanity and listen to the Father's words, as it says, "whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life " (John 5:24). Jesus Himself said, " I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do." (John 17:4). When the Jews asked, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:28-29).

Though no one can fully accomplish the will of God on their own, it is through faith in Jesus Christ that people are able to enter heaven. As Romans 5:1 states, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." It is by believing in and trusting in Jesus that one can receive the gift of eternal life (Ephesians 2:8-9). So, while no Christian who dies will enter heaven on their own merits, it is through faith in Jesus that they are able to be reconciled with God and ultimately inherit eternal life.

Therefore, the only way to enter the kingdom of heaven is by believing in Jesus Christ, who was sent by God. If this statement is true, then doesn't every Christian believe in Jesus? And if so, does that mean they became Christians because they believed in Jesus? Yes, every Christian says they believe in Jesus, but their belief might not come from the heart. Jesus Himself said, "These people honor me with their lips,  but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain;  their teachings are merely human rules." (Matthew 15:8-9). As a result, not everyone who is buried at the cemetery and claimed to be "taken to heaven" actually enters the kingdom of heaven. So why do pastors and preachers often say, "He has gone to heaven"? The reason is partly due to spiritual blindness and partly because of social norms. It also serves as a way to comfort grieving families and provide them with some solace.

If spirits do not go to heaven, where do they end up? Do they find peace as inscribed on tombstones and in newspapers? According to the Bible, this is far from true. Instead, those who don't enter heaven face torment in the lake of fire. Jesus illustrated this when he said, "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’" (Luke 16:22-24).

Humanity is not destined to live forever in this world; one day, we will all die. This is an undeniable truth about life on Earth. It's crucial to prepare the place where you'll go after death while you're still alive. Sadly, people often focus solely on their temporary lives and lack fear of death.

In truth, this life is fleeting and transient, like a shadow. Yet, people only focus on their temporary existence. The true life of everyone lies in the hereafter. In that future life, reaching heaven becomes crucially important; if one doesn't attain it, they will inevitably end up in hell. However, many individuals remain unaware due to ignorance.

God has provided us with free access to heaven out of His immense love for humanity. Without this gift, we would have no chance at all. Still, people often prioritize other aspects of life over securing their place in heaven. The opportunity to enter heaven is only available while we are alive; once deceased, there will be no second chances.

Therefore, let us consider acquiring the eternal life that God has provided during this lifetime; let us be eager and diligently pursue it. Do not become complacent until you have received eternal life. Since the Lord is returning soon, we must pay even more attention. Pursue eternal life with the same determination one would use when searching for gold or silver. It is important to note that Eternal Life is indeed free; however, because people do not give it the attention it deserves, they fail to obtain it.
