Why Jesus is God
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." (John 1:1-3). John called Jesus "the Word" because the scripture says this: "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe." (Hebrews 1:1-2). Therefore, the Word is Jesus Christ. And since the Word is God, Jesus is God.
Alfa and Omega
“Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:7-8).
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." (Revelation 22:12-13)
In these verses, the One coming with clouds is the Lord Jesus Christ. This is because He is the One who was pierced when they crucified Him; upon His return, those who pierced Him will behold Him again. "Those who pierced Him" refers to the descendants of the people who killed Him nearly two thousand years ago. Saying "I am Alpha and Omega" signifies that He is both the beginning and the end. In Greek letters, Alpha is the first letter and Omega is the last. Therefore, only God can be called both the Beginning and the End; angels cannot make such a claim. As it clearly states, "The Lord God who is eternal, existing in the past, present, and future,"—who is, who was, and who is to come. From these statements, Jesus Christ is clearly revealed as God.
The Root and the Offspring of David
"I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright morning star." (Revelation 22:16) When the Lord Jesus stated that He was the "root" of David, it meant that He existed prior to David. He is also the "offspring" of David, indicating that He descends from his lineage. A person cannot be both father and son; therefore, how could the Lord Jesus be both the root and offspring of David? This is possible only if Jesus is God—the Creator of David—while in His human nature, He shares David's lineage. Thus, He is often called the Son of David.
The One Who Forgives Sins
Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” (Mark 2:3-12)
What the scribes said about only God being able to forgive sins is true: only God possesses the authority to do so. Then why did Jesus say, "Your sins are forgiven"? Did He not know they would see Him as a sinner? Yes, He knew this and spoke out anyway. What this means is that the Lord was revealing that He is God by forgiving the man's sins. In doing so, He proved that He possessed authority on earth to forgive sins.
Emmanuel
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14) "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). (Matthew 1:23)
Isaiah prophesied ahead of time that the Messiah would be born of a virgin and named Emmanuel. This prophecy was reiterated by an angel to Joseph, who was told that the name Emmanuel signifies "God with us." This indicates that Jesus is God.
The Almighty God
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)
This passage prophesies that Jesus was born of a human. His name is explicitly described as the Almighty God. Moreover, it states that He alone possesses the attributes of the Everlasting Father and the Prince of Peace.
Thomas calls Him God
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:27-29) When Thomas called Jesus his Lord and his God, Jesus did not object but accepted it. Therefore, He is God.
Creator
"For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. " (Colossians 1:16) Since Jesus Christ is the Creator of all things, He is God.
Jesus Allows Being Worhipped
When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy. (Matthew 8:1-3). Jesus did not refuse the worship of the leper who had fallen down to adore Him; that was an acknowledgment of His divinity.
"While he was saying this, a synaggue leader came and knelt before him and said, 'My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.'" (Matthew 9:18). The fact that He did not refuse the worship of the synagogue leader was also a testimony to Jesus being God.
" The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs." (Matthew 15:25-26). When the Canaanite woman asked Jesus to cast out a demon from her daughter, she fell at His feet. Jesus did not rebuke her for kneeling before Him or worshiping Him; rather, He acknowledged her faith, which is an acknowledgment of His divinity.
So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him (Matthew 28:9). he fact that He allowed the women to worship Him after His resurrection shows that Jesus admits He is God.
"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.'" (Matthew 28:9). Jesus accepted the worship of the women after His resurrection, which is an acknowledgment that He is God.
Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. (John 9:37-38). John wrote that Thomas worshipped Jesus. Therefore, Jesus is God.
Our Great God
" For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ... " (Titus 2:10-13). In his letter to Titus, Paul described this event as the "glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." This is an unmistakable declaration that Jesus is God.
